Tavel: The King of Rosés
Before rosé became “trendy”
Long before rosé became a summer lifestyle trend, a poolside accessory, or a viral social media hashtag, there was a wine that commanded the tables of kings, popes, and literary giants. Nestled in the sun-drenched landscape of France’s Southern Rhône Valley lies Tavel, an ancient village with a unique distinction: in 1936, it became the very first appellation in France devoted entirely and exclusively to the production of rosé. And we're not referring to the typical pale-pink glass you might routinely reach for on a hot afternoon. This is Tavel: historic, complex, and iconically bold.

At La Bodega, we know how easy it is to fall into a comfortable wine routine. Over the past decade, the meteoric rise of the Provence-style rosé has conditioned many of us to look for the palest shade of pink in the bottle. We look for that ephemeral, translucent hue and expect light, crisp notes of watermelon and citrus. But, as we always say, wine is an endless journey of exploration. This time, we want to invite you to step outside the familiar and experience a style of rosé that rewrites the rules completely.

A Regal Heritage: The rosé beloved by kings, popes and writers
Tavel’s history is rich with the lore of the 14th-century popes who, during the Avignon Papacy, fell deeply in love with the region's robust pink wines, introducing them proudly to the papal court. It quickly earned a reputation as the “rosé of kings and the king of rosés,” championed across centuries by monarchs like Philippe le Bel and Louis XIV. Centuries later, legendary writers like Honoré de Balzac and Ernest Hemingway fell under its spell, waxing poetic about its profound character.
Tavel is everything that most modern rosé isn't. It is an invitation to look past the trend and rediscover the soul of the Rhône.

A Small but Mighty Pioneer
Tavel isn’t just another wine region; it’s considered a pioneer. It made history by becoming the very first official French appellation (AOC) dedicated exclusively to rosé. Tucked into the Southern Rhône Valley just west of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this tiny region can barely be spotted on a map. Imagine an incredibly boutique, small-scale production—roughly 1,000 hectares total, which is just a tiny fraction of the massive volume Provence churns out every year. But what they lack in size, they more than make up for in flavor and character.
Beyond the Pale
What makes Tavel so unique? While conventional rosés are often treated as light starters, Tavel behaves much closer to a fine red wine. Instead of a single grape variety, it is crafted from a masterfully complex medley of regional grapes, including Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Syrah, co-fermented alongside white varieties like Clairette and Grenache Blanc.

The result is a wine that bleeds brilliant sunset hues of deep coral, rich magenta, and warm crimson. When you take a sip, you are met with vibrant bruisings of dark cherry, wild summer berries, and a savory backbone scorched with earth, spice, and underbrush. It possesses a weight, texture, and structure that allows it to do something few other rosés can achieve: age gracefully for years.
The Tavel to Drink Next...
While Tavel remains an insider's secret in much of the global market (you won't even find much of it here in the Philippines!), it has long held a sacred spot on the tables of Europe’s finest gastronomic restaurants. This is a wine built for food. Because of its weight and complexity, it doesn't get washed out by a meal. It stands up beautifully to grilled meats, spicy Mediterranean dishes, roasted duck, and complex cheeses. It is currently adored by sommeliers worldwide who seek to surprise diners tired of the same old pairings.
Our newest winery, Vignobles Strasser Radziwill, spans 4 domaines across France, capturing the unique essence of the Southern Rhône and Mediterranean terroirs.
